HOW is it done?!

This is a real question. I hope for real answers, posing as "comments."

How on earth do people do all of their homework in college?
Do you do all of the readings? Do you "speed read?"
Can you remember what you've read, or do you lose it all when you cram the next assignment into your brain?
How many hours--honestly--do you spend doing homework?

Because, wow; I have a lot of reading to do.

  1. Good question Peggy. Typically a good college student will spend 5-10 hours per course per week doing homework (more when there is a major project due). People who study this sort of thing find that students tend to "coast" (skim or do selective reading) in classes that are relatively easy and focus their energies on classes that are required but difficult.

As for remembering, that's where highlighters and marginal comments come in. In grad school, it was not uncommon for me to have to read 3 or 4 books a week for my courses. And those books ended up looking like a battlefield by the end: all dogeared corners, underlines, scribbled notes, bristling with post-its, etc.

  2. Peggy, I think it might be even more difficult for non-traditional student like you...It's us traditional students, who should be learning from you and asking: where on earth do you find the time? :)
